Fair Trade Decor
The 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Nepal on April 25th has devastated the country, but thankfully news is trickling in that the artisans and their families are by and large safe, though many homes have been lost and workplaces damaged. Fair Trade Federation member organizations have set up a list of fundraisers for relief and rebuilding in Nepal and India. All donations will go directly to relief for the artisans. Our hearts go out to the people of Nepal. We strongly encourage you to donate and help these people rebuild their homes and livelihoods.
Carved by hand using only rudimentary tools, these pieces are made from mahogany by an experienced wood carver. While carving provides the majority of the income in the Machos region of Kenya, fellow craftspeople earn a living through hand painting various animal prints on the pieces.
These beautiful bowls are hand carved by artisans in Peru. There are no lacquers or stains used in making these bowls, only a natural wax finish. Higuerilla wood is sources from local forests. The artisans earn a fair living wage with health insurance and have a safe place to work.
